I have the 6.0 Transmission Cooler, and my transmission was runnung around 140 degrees empty. I just installed the External Filter from Dieselsite, with the lines to the filter going over the exhaust shielding, and noticed 2 things:
The pressure gauge on the filter stays in the yellow area at idle
The transmission temperature runs about 10-20 degrees warmer
Could it be that the transmission lines picks up heat from the exhaust? I will appreciate advice from anyone who installed this kit.
Do you have a afterrmarket valve body or transmission module? When I bought my external filter it said either of those things would cause the pressure gauge to run higher than normal. I dont have a temp guage so I can comment on the temp. problem.
I have now added a 4" exhaust and DP Tuner F5 chip, and the transmission runs about another 10 degrees hotter. The Dieselsite External Filter still shows in the yellow area, since the install about 3 weeks ago.
I am now wondering if my bypass valve could be open, causing less fluid to go through the cooler, due to the restriction of the external filter.
That would explain the warmer temperatures, and because the pressure after the external flower is lower than what it should be, because of low flow through the filter, that could be why the external filter gauge stays in the yellow area.
Brian from BTS advises against using external filter for the transmission. The external filter causes restriction of the flow of fluid. Therefore more heat buildup and loss of performance. The filter in the tranny does an excellant job of filtering the the tranny fluid. If you are want something extra check out www.filtermag.com
I had an external filter in line also. When I had my tranny rebuilt by Jimmy
Galant of Valley Truck and Trans,(RaceTrans.com) he told me to remove it. He said when he tested the flow of the pump and sytem that it showed up as a blockage/restriction in the system. This, due to the filter. He went on to remove it and said that there should never be an external filter on these tranny's. They cause flow restrictions and raise the tranny temps too. I know some of the guys here swear by the external filters. But this is my experience with them. Take Care...Country
Perhaps there is a small "booster pump" and bypass valve that can be installed in conjunction with an external filter to overcome the filter's pressure loss?
I've been interested in the external filter myself, but haven't gotten far enough along to investigate it and discover what you guys are bringing up about the pressure drop issue.
Does anyone know of an external pump whta would work for the tranny fluid, (sort of like the Carter booster pump that some of us use on the fuel line)?
