C6 tranny problems help please!

I have a 76 f250 with a 460 with a c6 tranny. The truck has been sitting for about 3 years and just got it running the other day. The problem is when u crank it up it goes right into gear no problem and will drive for a few hundred feet till it just slowly gives out then won't go into any gear. If you shut it off for a few min and start it back up it will do the same thing. Go for a bit then jus quit. I'm thinking maybe a vacuum line or fluid issue. Has correct amount if fluid in it but maybe it's old idk??
Any opinions are welcome I have done some research and can't find anything helpful thanks!

Could possibly be the filter in tranny suckin up crap and stoppin up. When it sits crap falls back down . Worth pullin pan and changin anyhow if it sat for that long.

Even if the fluid is really old and funky, its not being driven far enough to heat up to any noticeable degree..........Also, if you cant properly drive it to operating temp, you cant be sure that the fluid level is correct! I dont have a manual nearby, but i seem to recall that to properly check it, youve got to run it through all gear ranges, and to full op temperature to get an accurate reading

I have always let them Idle to operating temp than check the fluid in neutral.
I belive this is what the manual will say as well. Before ya drive it any more
I would change the fluid and filter. Look for a drain plug on the converter when
draining it all. If ya had a vacuum problem it would shift hard and hang in gear
and shift weird. Does the fluid smell burnt or is it really dark? It should be a bright red color.
If it is salvageable now and you continue to try and drive it you will
only do more damage. After the fluid and filter change I would also use Lucas
trans treatment in it. That stuff works well. I am not fond of any snake oil additives
but Lucas works. It's not like an over haul but can get ya by for a while.
Know that the C6 is Fords best and strongest stock auto trans. And very easy to over haul.
If ya can follow directions to build a model car or plane ya can do an over haul
on a C6.

Yea that's the plan is to drain it and change the filter. The fluid look ok on the stick as far as color goes but that doesn't mean much. It hasn't left my field so i haven't drove it very far. Hopefully that will fix the problem. It has sat for a long time and there's no tellin how old the fluid is

Let us know what ya find in the pan. If the pan has never been off there should be a plastic white plug with an O-ring in it there. That is what was used to plug the
dip stick hole while it was transported or stored before factory installing. It is pushed in when the dip stick tube is installed.
Also I would for sure put a quart of Lucas in when ya change it. Can ya get us a pic of what is in the pan when ya pull it? Like how much brass/copper looking grit is
there? That will be clutch lining and there will always be some. I love the C6 and
used to know them well. I have rebuilt a few hundred of them and would like to
help as much as I can.

Could we see some pictures? Here is how.

But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?

How to upload pictures to the FTE Forums. - YouTube. Thanks Sam Rusty_Old_F250. Best we can find is that this video was done by Gundown64

Do one thing before wasting time and money on new fluid and gasket. When it quits, leave engine running and break cooler line loose, see what comes out. If fluid is pumping, then you have internal failure, if fluid is not pumping, then remove pan and verify why. Could be valve body issue resolved upon fluid change or pump failure. Good luck.

We'll I pulled the pan today and it was full of sludge and the filter was completely clogged. I'm surprised it moved at all. So now I'm going to flush it and see what happens. Hope that will fix it. I'm trying to post pics at the moment
