I have a 1983 F-150 with a 351W in it. I changed the tranny fluid recently because the motor had 115,000 miles on it. The transmission had started to slip and jump out of gear beacuse of low fluid. After I changed it I found out that a cooler hose had busted so I changed it. I checked it and the fluid is good. But the problem is sometimes when I nail it from a stand still the gear will shift hard and it'll fly off the line. No problem I like it. When you hold it to the floor though where it normally shifts at 45 it will stall and won't change gears and will stay in 2nd until I let off completly. I would like to know if you could help me figure out what is wrong with it.
Make sure the passing gear linkage is not binding up at the transmission. There should be a plastic bushing on the end of the rod that may be missing and causing a bind, and not letting it come out of 2nd. Ive seen this before.
You might want to change out the modulator and check your vacuam connections too. When you "lost your fluid" and refilled the system you should keeep an eye on the new fluid. See if it gets cotaminated and dirty fast if so, you might want to change it out again. Did you drain the converter? Otherwise the old fluid would mix with the new fluid reducing the new fluid life.
Hey I didn't drain the converter. I didn't know I had to but I'll check out the modulator and vacumm conections. Someone told me the front pump or something might be gone.
damn brent look what youve did to your truck now, hey did you change the filter in the tranny as well, im sure after over 115k that should be changed too. hey man i got to go work on my log splitter engine(300 six) changing out the cam, later.
