C6 slipping?

C6 slipping?
A buddy of mine with a c6 in his 79 that is not shifting into gear immediately (unless warmed up). If it is cold, it will go into reverse after a few seconds, but then when shifting back to drive, it will sit for 20-30 seconds and then shift into gear. It runs strong and does not slip when pulling, etc. He also said it only does this before it gets warmed up.
A mechanic told him that he could flush and replace the filter and it should take care of the problem. Any suggestions out there?

First he should check the fluid level. If ok, then check the fluid itself. Make sure its not too dark. Should be a nice red color. Other than that it could be an issue with the tranny not geting the fluid to all where it should be. Then it could be time for a tranny job.
