400K is all she wrote. I used a little over a gallon of oil last tank of fuel. Blow by is excessive and I'm going to do a compression test on it when the weather gets better and I get some new glow plugs. I'm planning on rebuilding this myself but I'm looking for some real world cost fiqures from people that have done this. My injectors and turbo have less than 10k miles on them and I'm just looking for long block information like things that need to be checked and or replaced etc etc.
I'm not looking to build a 600 hp screaming machine, I got the Mustang for that, I just want reliability back...
Yes and no. Yes, from the surgery from last April. It took me 7 months to do a pull up though without pain. I got hit with a door at work and got a severe concussion, it has laid me up for a while now.
If the cylinders are ok, you might be able to get away with just a re-ring kit.
There are oversizing kits available on fleabay with pistons at reasonable prices.
Things to do while its all apart...
Hone the cylinders
Lap the valves to their ports.
Check valve spring tension.
Inspect and or weld up the piston oil jets.
Inspect cam lobes for any excessive wear.
Check crank journals for scoring, scratches, wear.. measure very carefully.
Measure push rods for overall length.
Deburr the block.
Polish intake and exhaust ports on the heads.
Take it all to bare metal... apply paint of some sort.
If it turns out to be just slight dusting... you might get away with rebuilding for around a grand.
I keep seeing people suggesting welding the piston cooling jets. Aren't they furnace brazed already, or is that only for certain production runs? Or are the furnace brazed jets the ones that are failing?
I found a engine that needs cups on craigslist for 800 bucks. It has 260K. Debating whether to buy that and rebuild or just do mine.
Second thought....What kind of hoist/ crane and engine stand do you guys recommend? One ton, two ton? I've yanked a lot of engines never one as heavy as this..
If someone is charging that much just for machine work they are hosing you
No that's not to bad
Strip down and vat 200.00 to 300.00
True bore 350.00 to 450.00
Line hone 175.00 to 275.00
Surface true deck 200.00 to 300.00
Cam bearings and plugs150.00
Now the heads
vat 50.00
Surface 150.00
Valve job (no parts) 175.00 to 350.00
Port and polish 350.00 to 750.00
Now the crank
polish only 100.00
If needs turned 200.00 to 300.00
This is a rough guess at prices some need more work some less.
It's not hard to make a hole bigger but to do it inline with the crank new ball game same on heads a bigger port does not mean more power just bigger hole only. Your talking 40 plus hours of work.
