Buddy of mine is selling me a complete 428 for my 69 F100. It's been sitting for a number of years, but supposedly ran good. I'm getting it for $500.00, and it's complete from intake to oil pan. Pretty good deal?
My question is, he recommends freshening the motor up. But, if I do a compression check and it's ok, should I go ahead? I assume the crank is ok, so I can probably still use it. If I rebuild, what can I re-use? I figure I'll need to replace the pistons, rings, rods and mains of course, and maybe a valve job? Also get the block checked out and cleaned up I guess.
Are there any good books I can get to help me with the rebuild? I've never had the opportunity or the need to rebuild an engine, and I've always wanted to learn. I know the basics I think, but your suggestions with what I need to do here is greatly appreciated.
I want to build it pretty much stock, no huge cam or anything too major. Maybe add alum. heads, better intake, etc. later. Want to have driveability, as I plan to use the truck to drive and show.
Do a compression check and if it checks good I would just rering the pistons and install new rod and main bearings if they look mildly worn. Be sure and check the clearances. May as well do the oiling mods while you are at it. Its easy and cheap while the engine is out of the vehicle and will insure it doesn't have to come back out of the vehicle for a long time. If it is worn badly a complete rebuild would be the only logical choice of course. This would all be for a mild performance build of course. ARP bolts would also be a wise decision if you are going to be spinning it up tight.
