The Rebuild Thread

If you have been following my last thread you know its time for me to tear it down and see whats going on with cyl #3. I intend to get some pictures of the tear down and make this a learning experience for other members. I've been doing some research for the past week and have found some answers, but there are many answers that are hard to find or that I get mixed reviews.

Lets put this up front... budget. $1000-$2000. Not a whole lot to play with.. id love to do more but I just cant right now.

First, what manual is the best?

Rebuild Kits - This is a performance motor and i would like forged pistons. Mahle's seem to be the best? I do have ties to get a good deal through a ford dealership but i assume they would not be an option through Ford? Or should i say screw it and go with stock?

Valves - I will be taking a look at them of course, but just as a heads up what milage do you usually see valve issues? Also any recommendations on valves if i see the need to replace? What about springs, see them weaken much? I am at the 226,000 mile mark.

Porting - I work in a performance shop and have done a decent amount of port jobs, also have "the old wise man" who has been porting for 25 years in house. I am pretty set on doing it, nothing crazy but see what I can do. Gotta do something to make this rebuild fun! Also i've heard it drops egt's a bit.. which i need! Lets here your take on this.

Ceramic coating - I can get it done for cheap, worth it?

Cam - Not looking to go aftermarket, but i wonder about wear. How many miles do you normally see out of a cam? of course depends on oil changes and such but just a general idea would be nice.

Other wearable items... lets hear them. Injector cups.. ect. I want this done right so i can get this thing problem free for once.

I'm sure i'll be coming up with more qustions.. haha.

Thanks for taking the time to hep!

Clay has the ford factory rebuild kit. I would go that way. He will have the best prices.

Porting will allow the air to move w/ less restriction. You will see less boost but move more air (GOOD THING)

Ceramic coating. I have head good things about Swain Tech

Swain Tech Coatings for engine piston coatings, race engine coatings, ceramic header coating, carbide metal coatings, thermal spray plasma coating, metalizing closures, spray welding

HPC

Check them out. I am building an engine at the moment so PM me if you want more info.

DI will regrind your cam for $400. He says you can safely go up around 4k w/ it. Get ahold of him and he can explain in much more depth.

I plan to ceramic coat the tops of my pistons. Exhaust valves too.

I will cryo as much of my engine as I can and i'm gonna teflon coat the side skirts to reduce friction. as well as bearings.

I am considering teflon coating on the whole rotating assembly.. I would imagine if you make the crank, rods ect slippery then you can move the assembly at higher RPM's w/ less strain.. This makes sense in my head.

Good luck

Thanks for the info!

I would just be ceramic coating the manifolds, not going to get crazy with the pistons and all that. Faster i can get this back on the road the better.

I'll contact clay as i dont see any pricing for the rebuild kit online.

Riffraff Diesel: OEM Overhaul Kit

You know our sponsor Applied Rotor Technology doesn't just cryo brake rotors, pretty sure. You might give them a call. Really good people.

$60 for a set of rods cryod is a sweet deal. Too bad my rods are still in a perfectly good functioning engine or I'd send them out.
I'll keep track of this thread because I want to build my engine this summer if funds permit.
I hope more people add to the info here.

Thanks for the link on Clay's site.

And thanks for all the info! I deal with a company that ceramic coats about 30 pipes a week for us at work so as you can imagine i get a very good deal there. That company is called New Image Coatings in Lino Lakes MN. They do very nice work!

As an update on the truck:

Tuesday night I took a lot of things off getting this thing ready. Turbo is out... now its time to drain fluids and take the radiator off. To set my conscience right from second guessing everything was proper on the leak down there was a lot of oil on the passenger side intake, where as the drivers side was minimal. Ford79 (Mike) is coming to the shop to help pull it on Saturday. Can't wait to see the destruction... kind of. haha. Pics and maybe a few vids coming soon.
