Same potential as the other pre-efi 385 series heads other than CJ or PI. On a stock basis you'll be limited to a cam lift of about .520 without spring problems. Without porting on the exhaust chamber any more lift than that will be wasted as the stock exhaust has poor flow. Stock rail rockers without guideplates and hardened pushrods are good to 5500rpm, but that's stretching it. Fully ported with matching springs and roller rockers they'll handle about any cam you'd want to run.

The C8VE, C9VE and the various D0VE (A,C) heads are pretty much the same. The main difference tends to be revised bolt holes or slight combustion chamber size or thermator passage as in the A vs C heads. But for all practical purposes, they are the same design as the famed D0VE-C.
BTW the D0VE-A has the thermator passage and the C doesn't.

I'm running a set of C8VE's on a 11:1 CR 429. Ported and polished, new springs, roller rockers and guide plates. They work great! The only thing I would upgrade to now would be a set of aluminum CJ's (if I had the $$$$)
