What's This Connection?

Hi,

While checking out a 91 7.3, I noticed that the pictured connection is separated. I couldn't find any details on it online or in a maintenance manual. The post is threaded and female side goes back to a wiring harness towards the rear spine of the engine. I asked the owner but he had no idea.

I would just cut the wire, put a butt connection on it, and tape it, but I just want to know what I would be re-connecting. I definitely didn't slide off - it looks like it wasn't re-connected during prior maintenance. He mentioned new injectors were put in about 6 months ago.

Thanks in advance!

You answered youre own question bud, see that little nub down there directly below your hand in the picture? Thats a sensor. I think its for the cold start solenoid but I may be wrong. A guru should be along shortly

Its not the cold start solenoid, thats on the passenger side of the engine and has 2 spade terminals.
I think thats the high temp warning switch, but it might be the coolant sensor, they're both somewhere at the front of the engine. Theres some nicely labeled pictures in others posts here that say what everything is.

x2 on reconnecting it.

Ahhh. Is that why after driving/idling the truck for a while, the temperature was indicating:

Again, sorry for linking the picture, and not embedding it directly.

If the gauge moves at all, then its connected to something. The sensor in question is your Over-temp light sensor. You can jump the wire to ground and check your dash to see what light turns on to be sure.

Engine over-temp sensor. It's what lights up the "engine temp" light. If you're unhappy with the reading from the temperature gauge, look into a new IH or Motorcraft thermostat.
