Cold start IDI's

Just wanted to share my cold start with you guys, this forum has helped me get this engine up to speed and reliable once again. Thanks to Chevy_eater for the great info shared/ links much appreciated.. anyway I was using a manual switch for the GP but got a free working controller given to me, so I figured I'll go back to stock simply because my wife and dad will be driving the truck and I'll always not be there when its cold out lol.. so here just a quick video just because

Thanks guys!!

Perfect! Yep, that after start cycling is normal. You have your GP system working 100%

And that's a good idea to use the controller instead of the button when it's a possibility that other people will be driving it, it lessens the chance of confusion and screwing something up.

I'm the only one that drives or works on my truck so it's a non-issue for me.

cold starts empty your wallet quick.

Cold Starts without block heaters plugged in = 300 miles worth of wear in 15 minutes.
Cold oil wont coat and flow into the piston ring pack, this is why it is noisy until it is at operating temperature.
Try cranking it up cold and driving it at highway speed within 2 minutes

Well first off your in FL you don't have cold starts there period (kindve why I stopped watching this video when it listed temp). Second off the reason it sounds noisy until up to temp is the cold advance, try a cold start with that unplugged and I bet you wont be able to tell the difference in cold vs warm. Third if it takes 15min for your truck to warm up something is wrong, in single digit temps at high idle it should only take 5min or so to get into the 140+ range.

As far as it being equal to 300miles worth of wear Id love to see the calculations you used (with actual wear quantities) to come up with that, every single study Ive ever seen using modern oils shows next to no increased wear on cold start vs warm start (15 deg vs 90 deg). Is there increased wear at startup? Yes of course, however the difference in ambient temps makes no measurable/practical difference until you get down well below the temps these trucks will start with no block heater anyways.

The coldest I've started this truck was 22*F outside, also no block heater... I don't have a cord, sounded the same. Warms up to 195-200 in about 10 minutes or less.. people in warm states don't get it lol..
It's all in good fun guys!

this last cold snap we had in WA I had 9* over nite, mind you I pluged her in when I got home each nite, she fired right up, I left it pluged and let it run ten minites heater was barly warm, van has aft heater too. so extra coolant, to heat up, no problem, the noise the idi make's is because of the precup, makes for a loud engine

Think my record is -15F with no block heater, had heat within a mile or 2 and fully up to temp shortly there after (no muffler + 3:30am + right next to neighbors house = no warmup time)
