1996 F-150 XLT Super Cab LWB 5.0, 4x4, auto trans, 33000 miles (my Dad's - 97 years young)
2 years ago front tank sending unit went bad - now truck can't run on the front tank. as soon as switch from rear tank, truck loses power - stalls - will die if at idle.
can apply accelerator while running but at noticebly lower RPM, no power and on verge of stalling.
after reading several posts, I've come to decision time and will drop tank, clean, and replace with entire fuel pump/sending unit.
Sound OK so far ???????
If so, can I re-use lock-rings and have looked at Rock Auto for replacement units......much better prices than Ford.......
Please, all suggestions, hints, and even snide remarks will be helpful.
Sure sounds like a bad pump to me. You can replace just the FDM (fuel delivery module). That's the plastic can looking thing on the end of all the tubes.
Do yourself (and your dad) a favor and get a Walbro FDM. Great quality, I've never once had an issue and have installed at least 30 of these on customers' vehicles.
As far as lock rings go, I don't think my Walbro FDM came with a new one, but it did have new o-rings. Most good parts stores like NAPA have lock rings in stock, or you can order online.
My problem is - and I didn't make that clear - the sending unit needs replacing also - never did fix it from 2 years ago. So, I thought maybe I'd need to get the replacement part that has both the sender and pump together in one unit.
I don't know whether that front tank has a 2-tube port unit or a 3-tube port.
And I'll get the new lock-rings when I order. Thanks again
Just re-read that and realized you need the sending unit too, sorry! I don't think Walbro makes anything with the sending unit. Whichever brand you end up getting, stay away from Airtex at all costs. I've had nothing but issues with them.
I take it you are talking about the front tank FDM as that is why you are having problems with the rear.
If you are saying you are going to replace both front and rear than that is a good idea also.
No problem with rear tank at this time -- gauge works and engine runs fine.
As soon as you change fuel tank switch from Rear to Front, it is instantly running rough/stalling/no power, etc. And I mean instantly.......
Sooooo I intend on replace the front FDM and sender unit (with float)- probably next week.
Looking at the either a 2-port fixture SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # SP2006H or this 3-port part SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # SP2010H. (both from Rock Auto) Don't know what I have yet on this front tank. Do you guys know?
Both of these parts have both the FDM with strainer/filter and Sender in one unit.
