hey guys...
i just had my mechanic replace both fuel pumps on my 1986 full size bronco, w/ 302.
i asked him to also reaplce the fuel guage sending unit.. he said it was part of the in tank fuel pump..
They're sold as a unit even though they're almost independent. You can buy a pump alone & install it in the original housing, but it's not much cheaper and you might as well replace the whole thing when it's that old.
The sending unit and in-tank pump are a part of the same assembly. While you can replace just the pump, you still need to remove the sending unit and the whole works from the fuel tank (making it necessary to drop the tank). He could have changed out just the pump on the assembly, but it would have been easier for him to have replaced the whole deal (they are available together, as the whole piece). You should be able to tell by removing the plug from the top of the sending unit (you'll need to reach up above the rear axle), and checking to see if it's a nice, new shiny part or one with 16 years worth of road grime stuck to it. Hope this helps.
