My neighbors got a 2008 F450 SD CC long bed with the 6.4L Diesel under the hood. Last time he had it in the shop his tech noticed something near the rear bumper on the driverside. He couldnt figure out what it was or find it in the computer for fords factory parts.. He asked me about it the other day and even I had no clue. So figured I'd ask yall here...
its not attached to anything else but the frame.. and just seems to sit there... you can wiggle the drum looking thing pretty easily.. Looks like its been there since the truck was assembled since its covered in the same undercoating as the rest of the frame.. Its got 4 little round bumpers (one of them can be seen in the one picture) spaced evenly around it. Theres no wires going to it either.. just seems to sit there.
Only one of my friends has seen something like it and they didnt know either.. They saw it on one of their friends trucks and stated all they knew was his friends made alot of noise going down the road. But my neighbor doesnt seem to have that problem..
so does anyone know what this thing is and what its for? or supposed to do?
This is a vibration dampener, it supposedly helps cut down on vibrations or bouncing while driving on the freeway.
is it a factory thing?? the only modification i know done to his truck was someone installed an inbed 5th wheel hitch.. one of those kinds where the ball pins flush with the bed... you can reverse it for when not in use then flips to ball side when needed... we thought it might have been part of that..
just saw the link lol... interesting read for sure... will have to let him know.. surprised his tech didnt know what it was since he left one of the ford dealers in the area to start his own shop... he got tired of the BS the dealer kept trying to pull on the customers..
It is a harmonic dampener. At some time the truck must have been experiencing a vibration or harmonic through the frame from motor, trans, what ever and they install these to cancel out the bad vibrations or harmonics. its becomming more and more popular on all sorts of car, expecially luxury cars, we even see them mounted to exhaust systems, frames, motor mounts, transmission mounts.
If you look under some of the light trucks and the Explorers you can sometimes find
one on the transmission tail shaft housing. It can be really hit and miss to fine one.
Some do some don't.
yeah had looked on mine to see if there was one there... but didnt find it.. thought maybe it was something for ones in the 1.5ton+ groups... that or started after my truck..
