Your dad is pouring money into a hole to have the trans shop diagnose an electrical problem with the trans control circuit. Since this is an old truck I'd start by pulling the computer and checking/fixing the 3 caps on it. Then do some very simple quick connectivity tests as everyone has suggested. You'll find the problem in an afternoon and save yourselves a ton of money that could be spent on cool stuff instead of educating trans mechanics on diagnostics of E4OD control circuitry.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try with my dad, but I'm sure you've heard about the "powdered butt" syndrome: once they've powdered your butt they really don't want your opinion on anything.
