Shift Solenoid?

I think i am having shift solenoid problems in my truck. Did a code test and that is what it came back as. Well the shifting problem isn't consistent. For a week it will shift fine and then one day it will act some shifting between first and second. Someone explain to me exactly how those solenoids work? Are they like a valve? could trash possibly or dirty fluid cause them to stick or not shift properly or do they just go out?

I can't answer that question, but I can show you a picture of the solenoid in the tranny.

The bottom left of the picture, the grey plastic series of connected cylinder looking things, with the orange plastic cover piece. That's the shift solenoid.

That picture is from a Factory Tech Monster Box tranny. When I had the MB put in my Lightning, fresh outta the box it threw some codes revealing the shift solenoid was bad. After some kind of test with a volt meter, the shop confirmed the solenoid was bad, and Jasper sent out a replacement solenoid.

Thanks for the pic and info. Just bought this truck and it has a jasper transmission in it. Can anyone tell me if they are good transmissions or not? If someone could, please let me know how i might be able to check those solenoids. I would greatly appreciate it.

I have a jasper trans in my truck and yes at first I thought it was a good tranny but after 6 months of driveing it , I'll be honest it's just as big of a P.O.S as the stock trans I have been saveing for a BTS and I would suggest you do the same. just my .02 worth!!

It is possible that dirt might be in the valve seats, but no very likely. Have you pulled and re-seated the connector on the top passenger side of the tranny that connects to the block. Might be as simple as a bad connection. I don't remember the exact ohms for each solenoid, but think it was something like 15 for shift and 30 on the line pressure. Not sure for exact, have to reference manuals. If they are out, a new solenoid body is about 300.00 last time I checked. Relatively easy to change out yourself.

poor shifts. if you really lay on it, it runs first out to the point that when it does change it chirps second and then lazily goes into third . I guess the line pressure must either be to much or not enough.if I turn the tuner to stock it shifts fine it's like the tranny can't handle the extra juice

Also, could someone tell me how much psi should be in the tranny lines? I can hook up my edge programmer and it will give me that read out while my truck is running and i am wondering about what number i should be looking for. Thanks
