I finally have the money to fix the truck. The attorney said I'd have to fix the truck and submit the receipt. Wonderful.

Here's a couple of pictures of the valve keeper compared to the nut embedded. Remember, the shop in question claimed that a valve keeper is what was in the piston. Right. The valve would be loose and bouncing all around if that were the case. Anyway, you be the judge.

You didnt even have to compare the two. A blind man would know the difference. But its good to have the pic for evidence.

What he's implying about the scratches on the valve is that the nut would have to go down through the intake and past the open valve to get to the piston. That might be a tight fit for a nut. The other thing is......did you have a missing valve keeper on a valve?

Sorry it's been a while.......

No, top side of the valves were all still in place. We took video of the removal of the valves.

Guess the next question was any of the intake valves on that piston scratched or scared on the back side?

No, not really. I get my truck back later today with all of my parts as evidence. I'll look closer. The thing is, if this happened really quick then it may not have bounced much if any. My only guess is its like a 1 in a million shot that if fell just right. Not too different than an impossible shot from the opposite end of a basketball court. It has to be precise. Hopefully that analogy makes sense. There's always a first time for everything, it just seems to have happened to me.

Man I have been on both sides of this.

Shop I built engines in 20 plus years ago had a legal issue due to this issue. Engine was built before I worked there. Issue dragged on for 6 years in court. Customer won and insurance and business paid out the Rear for it!

As a customer had work done for someone else and had a similar issue. Burden was on me to prove it. Took it to a buddy that dissected and documented everything and fixed it. My customer was happy and the shop that screwed up lost.

BTW if you shut it off as soon as you heard a difference, that could have saved most of the carnage!

HAHA!!! Thanks guys.

I'm starting to think the guy that worked on my truck was not a certified diesel mechanic. He did not service nor remove and inspect the oil cooler during this repair. I printed of the service bulletin from Ford explaining this as further evidence of a neglectful repair. Once this is all settled, I'll post other details. Still waiting on the attorney.

Sorry you had to go through all of this due to an incompetent shop. As an independent shop owner/operator it sickens me to hear of this stuff.

I would encourage you to read through the tech folder there is a lot of info in there that will help you in the future should you choose to do repairs on your own.

And FYI the reason why the EGR coolers fail is because the oil cooler gets plugged up. I wont do an EGR cooler for anyone of my customers unless they allow me to replace the oil cooler as well. You may want to invest in a Coolant Filter at this point as well to help prevent future failures.

Good luck with everything you will have to go through for resolution, but I am glad to hear your truck got you back home safe and sound.
