I agree but if the nut is softer than the valve, I wouldn't expect too much damage. We'll see what the top side looks like soon.
It is odd it didn't bounce around to me too from what everyone else has said in other experiences. Everything seems to be slightly different from case to case.

Iddunno.
Yea that nut probably got sucked in just right and got smashed by the piston just right so it wouldnt bounce around all over the place. Probably couldnt do that again in a hundred Year's.
What is crazy about this whole situation, the shops "experts" continually claim that the part embedded into the piston is a valve keeper. I sent pictures of the tops of the valve keepers intact plus the fact that the valves are still in place. Everyone on here seems to think the shop is at fault one way or another.
The shop is unfortunately 1,000 miles away and I think the owner thinks the distance will protect him from legal action. I guess he forgets about email and phones.

He's an idiot. Keepers are half moon, round. That is obviously a nut. I bet you can still see threads on the inside of the half nut.
Did you send him some pictures? That looks nothing like a keeper.
Sorry this happened and hopefully the mechanic will see that they messed up and make it right with you.
Trying to avoid this issue is no way to run a business.

Agreed. Sent him the same pictures posted here. He replied to one email that if there's not scratches on the inside of the valve, I'LL HAVE PROBLEMS. Not sure what he's implying there. He seems to think that I paid to have my truck fixed, drove it 1,000 miles and I somehow planted something to self-inflict damage to my truck. Um, yeah.

So the mechanic is a 1000 miles away?
Yes. The original shop fixed the EGR cooler. I drove the truck 1,000 miles back home and that's where the issue popped up.
