Does anyone have the time or simply know how large of a transmission cooler we can put in the front of our radiator on our dentsides?
I've just had surgery on my back and can't get to my dentside where it's being stored, but I want to order an auxillery cooler with my rebuild parts from Orgeon Performance Transmission.
How big can I go?
I was recommended by them to buy their 24,000 GVW 8" (tall) x 11" (wide) x 1.5" (deep) Tranny Cooler.
Seems like it's rated for RV's with that high of a GVW, and it seems like a fairly large cooler too...
The amount of clearance you have is going to depend on a couple of things. What year grille is installed, what engine you have (size of radiator), and does the vehicle have a/c.
The radiator hole is 27 1/2" by 17 1/2". Should fit fine.
Thanks!
So that's the size of the hole in front of the rad but behind the grille?
Any idea how deep that is?

It's a 78. the regular 78 grille on it (which I plan to keep), 351W at the moment but it will likely be a 302 in the end. Yes it will have A/C in the end, but at the moment it doesn't.
When I get around to installing A/C, it'll be way way way down the line from where I am right now, but I plan on getting one of those under-the-dash heater/cooling units instead of dealing with all that large old junk under the hood.
I have a 74 grill so the depth is different. Someone with a 78 will need to chime in. I cannot imagine a tranny cooler being thicker than 1 1-2". I would imagine without A/C it should fit easily.

I haven't ever had to deal with A/C yet, but does the stock A/C unit on these old beasts have a cooler of it's own?
I don't understand how A/C would restrict something near the front of the radiator.
The problem with AC is the condenser goes in front of the radiator. The condenser reduces the depth and width available for a trans cooler. Then there is a brace for the hood latch that limits width.
Here is a picture of mine with the optional OE ford cooler and factory AC. I don't have dimensions right now.
Judging pic its half the width and close to same height as the condenser (18.75x15). So... about 10" wide x 12" tall each side of hood latch support.

Very interesting stuff. I'm not trying to play stupid with this comment, but do all of our 78-79 trucks have that hood latch support in the Center of the rad support?
I honestly don't remember seeing that there on my truck whatsoever. I remember it being wide open from basically either side of the rad support opening for the radiator/airflow.
If all I can fit is 10" wide, it's a good thing I never ordered my aux. cooler yet... Cause it would have been too wide.
If you didn't have the ac condenser you could probably fit something all the way across. I found a hayden part #678 that says it fits, the size is 11 x 9.5 x 0.75.
The bracket is on all of the dents. Take a look at this ebay ad picture. The bar is what the latch bolts to.
