Is there a trick to removing the light switch? And I am assuming I need to remove it to get to the instrument cluster. The wiper switch came off easy enough, not sure about getting it back on, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there... My speedo is making noises and I'm trying to find the cause. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Yep. If you feel around on the body of the switch itself (I think it's on the top), you'll discover a button that has to be held down to pull the **** and shaft from the switch. You may be able to use the search feature on here to find diagrams if you can't locate the button.
Thanks, but I don't think we have the same switch. Definitely no button on mine, maybe a latch of some sort that has to be pried open? There is a small gap on the bezel, the same as the wiper switch, but I've been unsuccessful so far. I'll search on the forum though, thank you.
procedure as the wiper switch I think. I made myself a little hook type of wire so I can dis-engage those quickly...look at your wiper button it'll remind you how/what to press to help you.
Thanks everyone, I got it. Sorry Dorsai, you were correct, the button was under the switch, but there was a button. I was confused as usual, calling a bezel(or ****) a switch! And the **** removes the same as the wiper one. Reps for everyone!
On to the actual problem then, what would cause a scratching noise in the speedo? I've taken it apart and it seems fine, no noise when I turn the needle and it does so smoothly. Is there a gear where the cable connects that needs to be lubricated and if so, will graphite lube suffice, or lithium?
Look behind the cluster at the cable. Take some needle nose and grab the cable in the center and pull it out. I usually put some wd40 on a rag and wipe the cable down, but you can try different lubes. I would not use anything thick like grease though. Then put the cable back down in the center. Twist it when it's all the way in to make sure it engages back into the tranny gear.

In order to remove the cable for inspection you MAY have to remove it from the trans..(easy actually, in my case a 7/16" wrench)..you'll find a gear probably, and when you take the clip off the gear retainer ..you'll get the cable free... I used graphite..but you may need to clean it well first..that may be a real job since someone else may have used grease.

So you're saying just lube the cable itself? The back of the speedo has some grease around where the cable gets pushed in, I assume there is a gear of some sort in there? Thanks for the advice.

I'll probably have to do this. Where on the trans does the cable connect?

You said the speedo seems ok, so the cable is the only thing left that turns. Most old cars and trucks do make noise when the weather is cold, and it's usually the old lube being dried out on the cable.
