So my 49 F-3 rims are media blasted - powder coated and painted - and getting ready to shop for tires and tubes...
BUT - my guy at the shop SWEARS there are rubber bands that go either around the inside of the rim to protect the tube from rim or even wraps half way around the tube to protect it from both the tube and the tire.
I looked and looked and I think he is confusing this with the Model A rubber bands - which I know exist...
You need bands on a spoke rim , like motorcycle wheels . I have banded tractor wheels , because of defects in the rim , to protect the tube . Other than that ? If a steel wheel , good shape , I think he is confused also .
i dont know about these truck, but back in the day i remember seeing then on the 5 tons and bigger, even my old bicycle had them to protect the tube from the ends of the spokes.
Ray has it said, flaps are needed with tubes. While on the subject, thought, I hope you've done your homework reading up on the stock F-3 17" Firestone RH-5° widow makers, if they are what you plan to keep in service. Stu

They are not widowmakers - so the search continues for the 'flaps'....
They are needed even on lock ring style two piece wheels. I got a set of new flaps with the new tubes I recently had mounted with my set of NOS 7.50 x 17" traction tires. I got them from Universal Vintage Tire. Stu
I have always used flaps on all split wheel tube type. From 15 inch to 24 inch wheels.
Flaps come with tubes for the big trucks and can be got at any tire shop that sells
and/or repairs tube truck tires. They are as common as tubes and needed with tubes.
Agree, commonly the new tire comes with a flap and tube stuffed down inside. On the pictured set that I had mounted the tubes and flaps were dated 1988, so I thought better of using them. Safety types would argue the tires shouldn't be used either, but you can't get that aggressive pattern any longer. Stu
