Well as I have said before I'm very new to this site and have never tempted to restore an old truck. I have figured out that the c600 I own was manufactured with a 256 v8 because of the z in the vin no. I also found out that the block has an ecg 6015a lettering on it, telling me that's its a 272. I also found a tag on the front of the motor with a serial no. 6897 and date 9 27 6 I assume that that means its a 1956 motor. But what does the A after 6015 mean? Can anyone tell me, thanks!
Casting numbers are what is called "engineering numbers". A 6015-anything is a block. The A simply means it is the first revision of the design. The tag with serial number is more likely a warranty tag from a rebuilder.
I would guess that the same block was used for many Y-block family engines. Back then Ford used to change bore and stroke in 1/8" increments every shift change, giving them the 239, 256, 272, 292, 312 c.i. engines. They did the same on the FE series, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427....

I learn something new every day, Always wondered about that. Thanks Ross
I was being facetious, but it seems like the case. I can't believe they gave any thoughts to the nightmare they were creating for mechanics and parts guys.
Thanks Ross, that's some real interesting info. If that tag was from a rebuilder that might be good for me, seeing as the truck has 75,000 miles on it I can only assume the motor has less than that. I did get the truck running today and all went well. It will need new a tune up that's for sure, its not firing on all 8 cyls. New points cap rotor wires and plugs should do the trick. Fortunately it show having 35lbs oil pressure when idling. All said it was a good day, and most important I had a blast. Isn't that what is all about?

Because back then, the odometer went to 99,999 miles and then back to 0, you might have a truck with 75,000 miles, or then again it could have 175K, 275K,375K ..etc.
Yea your right, and I did think about that. I do know that this truck was on a farm and just used to hall water since around 1980. The truck still has the water tank on it along with a 10hp briggs motor with a Edwards water pump hooked to it. It spent is life in Oregon, and body is rust free. But there again what was it used for before 1980 is anybody's guess. As clean and mostly dent free as it is, it seems like 75,000 might actually be correct.
