I am fairly new to 4 wheel drive Fords. I have a 78 4 wheel drive with the 300 six and a 4 speed. We have had some rough weather here the past week and the 4 wheel drive worked great for a few days. Yesterday I put the truck in reverse and hear a clunking sound come from the front passenger side. I stopped got out and looked, but didn't see anything. The truck drove fine down the hill. When I got to the highway, I put it in 2 wheel drive and went to town. When I got back home I put it in 4 wheel drive to go up the hill. The truck stayed in 2 wheel drive even after I moved the shifter to 4 high. I tried 4 low with no luck. Where should I begin the search to find the problem? I tried unlocking and relocating the hubs with no luck.
probally a hub problem. jack up front end and turn wheel with nhub locked in see if ujoint is turning with wheel or not. if not the hub is not locking or is broken
hi,
theres a few things that could cause this problem.
checking the hub is probably your best bet..
some of these trucks have free-moving manual locking hubs
the other could be transfer case related.. i wouldn't touch that unless the problem is visible or the hubs are inspected
from your story it sounds like its not fully engaged at some point..
Well, about the only thing that should make a sound that comes from the front passenger side would be the hub assembly or front axle shaft..........you probably have an "open" front differential, not a limited slip and if the pass side front isnt getting power transmitted to the ground, the drivers side front wont be getting power either....
