Given my aging eyes, I purchased magnifying light last year which has an insert that I believe is around 4x (IIRC), so I should be able to at least get a decent estimate off of that, especially if I use my son's handheld 2x magnifier over the top of the 4x insert.
A neat little gizmo that I have is called a "hand-held optical comparator", and it's basically a jeweler's loupe with a very-finely-etched lens at the bottom. It's etched with measurements down to a thousandth of an inch.
By placing the lens on something, a very-accurate measurement of something can be accomplished. That screen mesh would be a cinch! You'd know the screen wire size and the effective openings between them, etc.

Very neat gizmo, Marv, and I would love to have one, but they are not nickel or dime stuff by any means. Perhaps one day I'll be able to justify spending $70-$100 on something like that.
Fortunately for me, it was a hand-me-down from my father, who was a rocket engine parts inspector in the 1960's, and is the one who taught me respect for the proper tools.
