The stock filter holds darn near two quarts of oil out of nearly FIVE GALLONS! What in the world are you looking to accomplish with a bigger filter?
These engines are by in large lasting much longer than the truck on cheap delo or rotella. Oil related failures are rare preventable engine failures from information gleaned from oil analysis are even rarer still. My advice is to follow factory service intervals, use a quality OE grade filter and then save the worry for the long term stability of our present day form of civilization
Five? With the ELF I only use 16qts, that's four gallons.
I think the 11.66 price is for a cheap knock-off. I purchased mine here: Oil filter, ELF7405, Donaldson - Ryder Fleet Products
and I bought a case of 6 at the time. As I change my oil every 10k, this case will last me several years.
Here is a pic on how the filter will sit on the truck. I have a 6.5" lift on 37's so I am not too concerned with clearance but even a stock height should not cause you issues unless you go nuts with it...
The one I referenced was a FleetGuard filter......see the picture.....is FleetGuard a cheap knock off?? I see all the rental fleets using them.....may be that's not a good thing though??

Hard for me to say. But, the actual Donaldson ELF says made in US, and gives more info. Back to what I said earlier, the Fleetgaurd has an outer diameter of 5.38", the ELF 4.6". Might be too big to fit. For me, 24 bucks isn't bad if I am extending the change. I also don't put more than 10-12k miles a year on my truck. My Blackstone report says 7500-9500 intervals are fine, so .
Oh, and I don't see any issue with the stock ride height, the front diff. sits lower.

Reason: add info.
I too run the Donaldson from fleetright. I have a stock height F550 4x4 and I have found if I bottom out the suspension, like hitting a RR crossing a highway speeds, I will find a dent in the filter made by the sway bar. So you gotta be careful. But I love the filter. 99% efficiency down to 15 micron IIRC my info correctly.

Barney, what's your change interval on that big donaldson? You still put a lot of miles on a year dont you?

I used too, but I just bought a little run around car to save the truck while I'm here in WA. But when I was running cross country, it was nothing to put 6500-7500 on in a couple of months. I still change my oil at 6K. I just like good oil and lots of filter. figure its cheaper than an overhaul.
That being said at 6K my oil is not BLACK, just dark. So the filter must be collecting most of the soot.
Barney
As for oil color... it will turn black for one of two, or both, reasons... soot and oxidation. A good oil which has a good additive package and is not run too long will minimize oil oxidation, and like Barney said, good filtration will keep the soot at bay.
