The fuel tank selector? Is it not working for you? There are write ups on people that have taken them apart to clean them out and they start working good again most of the time.
In fact I have to do this very thing today with our 94.5. For some reason it isn't switching tanks any more and is blowing the fuse.

What do you mean by "a canister between the tanks" ? If you're looking at something that looks sort of like this, you're looking at the fuel tank selector.
Maybe we should back up here. Can you tell us what the problem is that you are trying to solve?

No filter in the selector, the filter is forward of that selector about 1.5 - 2 feet. Both tanks share the same filter.
