We have had a 92 F-350 in the family since ordered from the factory and it is now mine. My fuel tanks appear to be running out of fuel before it even hits a 1/4 tank. I know that is right because I am only able to put in about 11 or 12 gallons. Is it true that diesel is so dirty that they might be filling up with crap and need to be replaced or should I look at something else.
If the tank had crap in it. You would be replacing fuel filters all the time. What is the truck doing at 1/4 tank? loosing power? Does it do it on both tanks? What I'm trying to find out is what exactly is your symptoms.
What has happened is the fuel pickup tube in the tank has broken off.
Common problem with the diesels.
If you are going to do both tanks it is almost easier to pull the bed off to fix them.
Dropping the tanks is a pain to do it the other way since it will have 7 or 8 gallons of fuel in it and a bunch of dirt on top of the tank.
Diesel is not dirty normally, if you have a bunch of crap in your tanks I suggest you buy fuel at a different station. Injection pumps and injectors do not like any dirt at all.
It is really sluggish all the time until I hit 65 MPH,then it will open up and at about 75 the fuel filter light turns on. At 1/4 tank It starts sputtering like it is running out of fuel and that is both tanks. So far I have replaced the fuel pump about 3000 miles ago and filters every 2 thousand miles!!!
Have you cut open the filters to see if there was anything in them? Wondering if you are getting air into the system. last month i had to fix my fuel lines on my 93 along the frame just in front of the tank switch.
I just cut my last one open and there was only metal shavings from sawing it. It was clear and also I have already replaced the fuel lines going to all the injectors
I just looked at the fuel lines and there appears to be no rust on them. Do you think that it could be the pickup tube in the tank and all the injectors?
Known fact that the pickup tubes crack or break off after a while. The run out of fuel at somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 tank is the classic symptom that that has happened.
You could drop the tank and put a piece of rubber hose over the crack, but usually shortly after that the gauge will stop working because the sending unit wires wear out.
My advise is to just replace the sending unit/pickup tube assembly and save having to drop the tanks twice.
Mine had skid plates under both tanks. Once you take all that stuff down and get all the dirt out, lots of which will wind up in your face, you will not want to do it again any time soon.
As far as your injectors, they do get weak over time.
If you have a lot of miles on them you will probably notice both more power and better mileage if you have them rebuilt.
I just had a set rebuilt here locally. They set the pop off pressure and replaced 4 nozzles. The rebuild price was 287 dollars here in WV.
