engine swap and E4OD

I did a search and found/read a lot of threads on this but none seemed to address my concern directly: I have a 1993 F150 4x4 with a very tired 5.0efi and E4OD. The engine is very tired, 250k+ on it, and is in dire need of rebuild or replacement. I have a freshly rebuilt early '80s 351w which is carbureted and would like to install this into my truck.

I understand the E4OD is electronically controlled and the carb engine would need an interface to talk to the transmission. What is the easiest way to do this? And what would be required?

-OR-

what would I need to convert the 351 to the efi? It is a mild build, nothing aggressive or crazy. If I remember correctly the 351 is a bit taller than the 302 so the intake lower might be too narrow?

I know I am asking a lot, but if anyone can point me in the right direction it is the people on this forum!

Thanks!!

The PCM needs input from several engine sensors to properly control the transmission, so I say make that 351 into an EFI motor. You will need a complete 5.8EFI intake, fuel rail, and distributor from a similar vintage truck as these parts will not transfer from the 5.0, and you will also need a 28oz E4OD flexplate since the 5.0 has a 50oz imbalance.

Use a C6! Wouldn't it be so much easier if the E4OD wasn't so reliant on sensors to shift!?!?

Broncoderek I would agree if he was building a truck from the ground up but since it is already an e4od truck and he is just going to a larger engine it kind if makes sense to stick with what he already has and not spend money he doesn't have to

Thanks for the input and information! I had considered going EFI on the 351, not sure though if it would work without a place for the knock sensor and such?

I am not adverse to switching to a C6 really, the OD is nice but I can live without. My E4OD is probably in need of some attention anyway. Aren't most C6's though for the FE's and "big blocks" and not windsor bolt patterns?

Thanks!

No I had to argue with a guy at autozone that my Bronco had an E4OD because their system only showed a C6 for part compatibility. I am pretty sure the E4OD was an add on option until a certain year then became standard but I could be wrong. I'm also pretty sure if you find one for an FE or BB you can use the bell housing off your E4OD to make it fit If you could get a good C6 and have all the parts to go carb and save some money I would say go for it.

Bell housings on pretty much all automatics (and now-days quite a few manuals) are integral with the trans housing. So you can't swap an auto trans onto an engine unless it came of an engine with the same bolt pattern. Meaning you'd need a C6 off a 351, 302 or 300.

Fully weighing my options, what's involved in a conversion to manual trans?
