doing engine swap from 5.0 to 5.8w my truck does not have mas air and was told as long as i get a ecm for 5,8 e4od computer for speed density it will work.can any one verify this for me and how to read info on ECM THANKS FOR ANY HELP,
Best bet is to use a PCM from a 1992 model. On the other hand pretty much any PCM meeting the above criteria from ~1988 to 1993 will work too. 1994 and later PCMs are setup for a different ignition system.
Are you sure your current truck has an E4OD? Most 5L trucks have an AOD in this era.
Glad to hear that someone else has the same setup that I do. I have a 93 F150 with 302/E4OD. I will eventually be swapping to a 351W as well. Thanks for the info rla2005!
Back to OP, can someone clarify that there is a difference between ECM with SD vs. ECM with MAF? If so, how do you know the ECM is configured for SD vs. MAF? Thanks.

Each style PCM is programmed for feedback from a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor for a Speed Density based system versus feedback from a Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor. You cannot swap one for the other without changing sensors and wiring. Speed Density PCMs are wired to fire the injectors in batch mode (4 at a time for a V8). MAF PCMs are wired for individual injector firing (sequential).
You have to match up the PCM programming code/part number with a lookup table to determine if a PCM is programmed for one or the other. The link I posted earlier has some of that information listed.
