I last posted that I wanted to swap out the noisy, grinding E4OD in our '94 F150 and put in a C6; since that post I have been warned about a rat's nest of problems that I will encounter, such as poor engine performance, cross member as well as driveshaft fitting issues. The owners manual lists the C6 as a transmission for the 1994 F150, but not even Ford knows of one that was installed in such a truck.
My question now is, can I put an AOD in without all the problems?
The E4OD will be my last choice for various reasons, 1) The price, 2) I work in a mine with unimproved roads, mud and/or dust, the E4OD was not meant for this. 3) There is a laundry list of updates to the E4OD that many rebuild shops haven't heard about. 4) I don't want to be doing this again in about 3 years, which, I have been told, is about as long as a rebuild job will last in the environment that it's used in.
What would be my best fit other than an E4OD? Overdrive is of no benefit to me.
What about a manual transmission with a clutch?
My other option is to sell the truck as is for about 1500 tops.
If you do the Upgrades the E4OD is nearly as solid as the the C-6. They used a later version of the E4OD behind the 7.3 powerstrokes so they had all the bugs worked out. it seem that as soon as a manufacure works out the bugs they drop it and come up with a new trany that takes 5 years to get working right
They usually put the E4OD behind the Powerstrokes anyways. They had their problems too. In 1995 they were updated, and then again in 96, in which case they became bulletproof.
You can use an AOD transmission, but what engine do you have? The 302 has the AOD put behind it in most 2wd models. The 351 NEVER had the AOD behind it, mostly because it wouldn't hold up to the 351 for a long period of time in a truck.
This swap is going to ask for a few parts. I believe that you have to get a flexplate and flywheel from a Crown Vic equipped with the 351 and AOD tranny. Your current one I don't think will work, if memory serves me correct.
If anyone else could chip in and add to the information I've given, that'd be cool! I've given all that I know!
