Hey guys quick question, esof not working due to a vacumn problem I didn't have a problem to take care of. Having to manually lock the hubs to use four wheel. My issue is when the hubs are locked, but switch in cab is not in 4x4 it sounds fine. While the in cab switch is turned to 4x4 there is a grinding noise from the drivers side hub area, this noise only pops up when accelerating, let off the go pedal and noise stops. Question is since its currently eighteen below zero here and all the roads are glazed with ice im wondering how easy a fix this would be. Can I just replace the locking part of the hub or do I need to replace the entire hub assembly? Just don't want to lay out in the snow any more then necessary right now. Thanks.
You can replace the locking assembly alone, but if you have something grinding, you might need to replace the whole shebang. I would simply open it up first to see if you can spot the damage. A lot of guys (including my son) convert over to manual locking hubs with either Warn or MileMarker parts. We chose the MM parts because they are 100% metal and not as costly as the Warns, and after a year, absolutely no issues.
Its probably the inside bearing when loaded. I have heard you can change it out even though they say it is not serviceable. You still have to pull the hole thing a part including ball joints I believe. Its a project in the cold for sure but we've had guys do hole engine changes outside in Alaska.
