ok truck is an 01 350 4x4 7.3. back ground on what we have done. ball joints and warn premium hubs. now the noise we are chasing. passenger front hub sounds like is spinning/grinding/squealing maybe trying to engage??? this loving sound comes to us with both the warn and OEM hub on this wheel ( it is LOUD). this noise is worst on dirt or bumpy road (we live on dirt) but 99% gone on smooth asphalt. said noise also goes away instantly if i put her in 4 high (without locking hubs) bearing feels solid and wouldn't be intermittent. so it looks to me as if maybe we have done something wrong??? cant afford to toss $$$ at this so I'm starting here with you. THANKS Aaron
I wonder if your hub bearing assembly itself is going bad? (Just a thought). Im going to be changing both of my front hub bearing assemblies before winter gets here. Good luck.
jacked it up and it felt solid. I'm thinking maybe we did something wrong on the ball joint swap to cause this? have reread info and cant find anything we missed so i came here to see what panned out. it is intermittent and doesn't happen when i hit 4high switch (when axles turn and hubs unlocked) i would think bearing is a full time noise?
There is a needle bearing race on the inboard side of the spindle. That race does not turn when you have the hubs locked or when the front axle rotates with the wheel.
This bearing could be failing or dry. The downside is that you have to disassemble a lot of other stuff to get at that cheap bearing race.
