I'm removing the transmission on my 98 E250 4.2L to replace the torque converter. I've realized that I need to remove the cross member first and have started the process. Does anyone have any hints or tricks making this easier. This weekend I am really going to dive into it so any help would be appreciated. Also, is there any literature on this or videos?? I've searched but could not find any help.
If no one responds here you might also post this in the sub-forum for transmissions, et al: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum69/ If you're lucky Mr Mark Kovolsky might suggest a few things to do while the trans is out. Unless I'm completely off base there seems to be an improved front seal that could be installed at the time.
Yes, there is a better front seal than the stock one. It is made from Viton. I do not have part numbers. You should be able to get one anywhere that sells transmission parts, except maybe a dealer. They would just have the stock parts.
You also want to replace the torque converter hub bushing.
