Hey guys. I have a 96 f350 7.3 4x4. 5 speed. I'm rebuilding the motor and fixing all the leaks, its purty well stock. I've installe a ts 6 chip and that's it so far. What I need help with it I want to make a lot of power for towing and be safe for my engine. What parts do y'all know I need to get, stuff like a boost fooler stage 1 injectors and a biger turbo. What eles can I do to make more power?
There are more than a few guys on here who will be able to give you some great info on building a reliable 400+ HP tow rig (I'm more a student than a teacher at this point). One tried and true recipe that seems to work really well is:
6637 intake
3" downpipe and 4 or 5" exhaust
Stage 1 or 2 Injectors
S366 Turbo (and the needed up-pies and T4 mounting kit)
Intercooler and plumbing
Gauges to keep an eye on all the vital signs
Custom tunes to run it all
A clutch rated for that kind of abuse (your stocker won't hold up to those power levels).
T-500 HPOP
E-fuel (replacing the manual pump and fuel bowl system)
Other optional pieces to add reliability and further protect your investment are
Head studs and valve springs/push rods. These aren't probably required if you run stage 1 injectors, but when you start bumping on 35 PSI boost while towing it's some really good insurance.
It's not cheap to build a Powerful and Reliable tow rig, but it can certainly be done.
Wow thanks for the quick info. I have a 3" down pipe and the wicked wheel and the ts chip so far. I plan to put in arp head studs and swap to the efuel (do to my fuel pump is now pooring fuel). On the parts about and you tell me were to get them or any part numbers. I plan to rebuld the turbo with the 360 kit but what about this boost fool thing? How do you do that to you map? I can bairly get 18psi boost on race mode how could I get my boost numbers higher? Thanks guys for all ur help
Boost = fuel so the best way to get more boost is to get more fuel (within the limits of the turbo).
Personally, given the mods you have already done or are planning to do to the truck, I think a set of stage 1 injectors, the stock turbo and WW2, e-fuel, and an intercooler are a great place to start. You might even find that with that setup your old HPOP is okay (though a T-500 is a great addition to make sure you get all you can out of that setup). If you watch the boost carefully or use tunes that are mild enough to keep the boost below 35 PSI you're generally considered to be safe with the stock valve springs and push rods.
For parts, Riffraff Diesel is your best friend.
For the IC, most guys source the IC out of a Super Duty 7.3 or 6.0 truck (the 6.0 IC is bigger, but has plastic end tanks whereas some of the 7.3 IC's are all aluminum). The pipes can either be built yourself, or can be bought from Banks, or you can modify some pipes from the same truck you get the IC from (7.3 trucks especially). The hardest part to find is the spyder that ties the turbo, intake plenums and IC pipes all together. You can get one of these from an e99 7.3 truck, or build one yourself.
You're going to want to have some custom tunes put on that chip once you get to that point too, and there are a lot of different guys out there who can do that for you and burn them to your existing chip.
I don't think most of the OBS guys find that a boost fooler kit does them much good (that seems to be more a Super Duty thing).
Edit: ooh, and bellowed up-pipes are a really good idea while you have the engine out of the truck too. How is your mechanical aptitude? Are you a decent welder who doesn't mind fabricating some of your own stuff, or would you prefer to source the parts and just put them together yourself?
You're pretty much safe without head studs if you have stage ones until you upgrade the turbo. You're egt's will be higher with the stock turbo, it doesn't flow enough air. You won't be able to hold high boost very long. You won't need a boost fooler with the stock turbo either. I just put one on the other day as I set the 238 code on a hard pull, 35 psi+ boost for a while. I'm running a S366.
My signature shows my mods, and I'm extremely happy with it towing powerwise. That is all I use my truck for, at least 95% of the miles. Took quite a bit of money and time.
Wow guys y'all have blowin my and my money away. Needless to say I'm going to be broke for awhile. I'm working from one end of the truck to the other I've got 4" exhaust to 6" stacks I'm replacing exhaust gaskits and stuff were do i get the bellow up pipes and what up grade turbo do I need to get there are way to many. Thank you guys so much
If you're going to upgrade to an "S" series turbo, the mounting kit you can buy comes with a set of bellowed uppipes. If you are staying with the stock turbo, bar none has them, rosewood diesel I think does, riffraff has them too. Shop around prices vary and they aren't very cheap.
Hey guys I've hit a snag. I cannot find a banjo block anywere so I guess ill run new line to the back of the heads. Does anyone know what size AN fittings I will need to fit the factory fitintings in the back of the head? Also as far as the up pipes go do you just weld in the bellows pipe to your old collectors, I haven't found the kit with the s366 turbomounting kit and up pipes.
