... the wires on the bottom side of the harness rub the valve cover and over time will short out on the valve cover.
The wire that first shorts out happens to be the same fuel bowl heater wire.

I was looking at the heating element. Mine is the old style, will the new style bolt right in without any mods??
Mine did. My old one looked like a tiny heating element from a stove...or at least what was left of it. The new one does look a little different but it attached the same and woks just fine.
And another note....Once you do replace it...before putting the cap back on, have someone at the ignition key and you watching the bowl, have them turn the key to ON without starting it. As the fuel gets close to the top have them turn it off then put the cap back on. then key on again and check for leaks. Remember, it needs to fill and pressurize the fuel so give it a few seconds.
Then crank it and start it up.
