I am a noob. I've got a leak that seems to be my lower radiator hose. I bought a new one to replace with. I think this is easy enough, but I'm wondering if there are any tricks I need to know. I plan to:
-drain the coolant from the plug
-remove hose clamps
-remove hose
-grease ends and replace

Replace top hose and t-stat if you can. This will completely drain the system. If you can't, open the radiator cap so that gravity will force all of the coolant out of the radiator and up to the t-stat.
Before digging in on the hose change, check and make sure the coolant isn't running down from the water pump, then down the hose making you think it's the hose. You'll have to remove the hose even if it is the pump but there ain't no use having to do the hose thing twice if the leak re-occurs after the new hose is installed.
Grab ahold of the top hose (when cold or you will burn your hands) and give her a big squeeze and hold. While your doing so it should be squirting coolant from your problem area. Mine leaks from the bottom of the radiator itself and mimics a lower hose leak.
Use the petcock at the bottom left of the radiator and turn it half out while using a large bucket to catch the coolant. Its cleaner than dumping on the ground and the stuff is toxic as all hell and animals think its candy and will lap it up! Capture it and reuse or dispose.
