Hi. I just pulled the alternator out of my '03 e250 4.6.rotor was stuck tight. By the time I got it out, the rotor had come free, spun ok, doesn't seem to have any excessive play. Had it tested, it works fine-BUT- the case has a crack about half way through it. Could this have jammed the rotor? How likely is this to get worse? I am thinking I should replace it anyway, it's the original w/130K and that crack isn't gonna get better, so how do I identify which of the roughly 2,000 alternators offered at Rock auto is the one I need? I don't see any part numbers or specs.
Thanks, Eric
Doesn't Rock Auto have a drop down selection box or searchable feature for your year, model and engine?
With an already known issue I'd scrap that alternator without hesitation. Indeed the case crack won't heal itself so it's not a good idea trying to save it or keep running it. We all know it'll fail for the last time when its absolutely the least convenient time for you!
