So in the ongoing saga of fixing broken crap on my ex... I was experiencing a whining sound when steering and tonight while driving it went away. Along with the ability to use power steering and oh yeah brakes!! WTF?! What do those teo have in common? I was scheduled to take it in to get the front axle seals replaced Monday but don't really feel like muscling the beast into the shop with no brakes! The power steering reservoir is completely empty now and my driveway is covered in fluid!

Gas, Diesel? Aren't the diesels hydro boost brake systems? that would explain the loss of brake assist. Some sort of failure in the PS system.
I'm almost certain that the diesels are hydroboost which explains the loss of brakes. Whining when steering is usually a worn out pump and if it broke and lost all fluid somehow that would definitely cause your issues.
Yeah it is the pump. I just poured some MERCON V in and then started it up to turn the wheels. It ended up dumping all of the fluid from the pump. I'll probably end up getting it towed to the shop Monday.
That happened to mine earlier this year, but mine kicked off the fan belt (shredded it) when the steering pump went too. Good thing is you can get a pump in the neighborhood of $60 plus the fluids.

Yeah I did see they are pretty cheap. How difficult is it to replace though. I'm pretty familiar with working on cars. I've replaced a starter, alternator, and brakes but I'm not sure if I can handle something like this.
It's not extremely difficult. You will need a puller to get the pulley off of the pump. Otherwise the three bolts will not back out far enough for removal. Autozone loans tools, if you didn't know already.
Is the headache worth the money saved or should I just fork over the $400 to the dealer to fix. I'm military so I don't really have the time to fix something else I break in the process
Man you must be an Officer if you can just take it down to the dealer!
It is VERY easy to fix. Autozone will get the pulley off for you if you do not have the tools. If worse comes to worse you can go by the Auto Hobby Shop on base. Those guys are usually very helpful and have all the tools you need.
Might want to crawl under the truck just in case and check your break lines. We forget them and they are notorious for rusting through. Since you lost breaks as well a good reason to just take a look and make sure you don't have rusted lines.
No I'm not an officer. I went ahead and did the replacement myself. After 4 hours I still have a leak, turns out it was from a line not the pump. Guess I'm gonna go get new ones tomorrow or whenever I can get a chance
