It's a 390. Seems original too. Nice. 65 vintage. Block 5D18 is 65 April 18, heads are from the 15th. C4AE-B crank a 390.

Ford pistons sometimes had the displacement cast into them near the pin holes. A quick check with a dial caliper will tell you the diameter. You already know the stroke with a C4AE crank. A C3 block I would think would have two mount holes per side. But I could be wrong on that.

The motor mounts have 3 bolts. The block casting
Is poor and hard to read. The first letter is C 2nd could be a 3 but it's messed up
3rd is clearly an M the rest is a mess. It's not important though
It's a nice 390 that's all that matters. I was just
Wondering about pistons and CR of them.
Thanks for all your help

here is the piston.....

Anyone in New Jersey of New York that can recommend a real deal FE builder?

More'n likely that's a C6ME-A block. Never seen one that bad on the outside though. As such, I doubt it's an untouched assembly with those heads, crank, rods and a C6ME-A block. But you never know with Ford. Clean the piston top off and see if there's an overbore stamped into it. Looks like a std 9 to 1 piston though. The early 10.5 to 1's had a shallower dish and no valve reliefs.

Still looks like a "6" to me. Could be an "8" but that would denote a 428CJ block. Pop the center core plug out and see if there's a "428" cast into the bore wall.

Yea, hadn't thought of that. Measuring the piston at the skirts will give you the diameter, but it's got to be a 390 with that crank.

Are you talking about the little freeze plugs? its drilled and hydraulic.. I think those markings are nothing.. it would look like a C was welded to the back.. not.. crayola..
