Are there vertical ribs on the sides of the block?

Talking

Just like my block??? You been hanging around in my basement again? Just kidding. The reason I asked was most service blocks have no casting numbers and have vertical ribs on the outside of the block. Check the date code under the oil filter adapter. This will tell you what year the block is anyway. Measure the bore or the block. 352-4.00" bore. 390-4.05" bore. 428-4.13 bore. 427-4.23 bore. There are other blocks that have the same bore but this will help narrow it down a bit. The C8 heads are 352/390/428 heads. Nice runners with a little work or ok stock. Do you have the crank and rods also or just the heads, intake and block? If you have the crank and rods post the numbers if possible along with the cyl bore measurement. G.

the date code? can you tell me where that is I had removed the oil filter neck and there was a dif 18 under there. I have the whole engine and it came in a 79 f250 it runs like a top. I bought the truck for $400.00 and I knew there was a fe in it But I was wondering how. it also has the stamped powered by ford valve covers.

The date code is right underneath the mounting pad for the oil filter adapter on the block. The block has a small angled part underneath the mouting pad. On the angled part you will see a number/letter/number(s) This is the date code. Post it and I'll decode it for you. The date code will be upside down with the block upright so you'll have to sneak around it if it's on a stand or cradle. The DIF is Dearborn Iron Foundry and 18 is the mold number used to cast the block. Post the crank number if you can. There should be a casting number on the bottom of the 7th counterweight. Look for 2U, 3U, 2T, 2TA on the crank. Rod numbers are on their sides. Should be a full casting number like ex: C7AE-B or similar on the rods. These numbers with the cyl bore measurement should tell what you have. G.

Oh forgot to mention. When you check the date code let me know if there are two dots underneath the first number. Thanks.

on the right side of the block nearing the front you will find a code... like c8ae-(?)
your heads come from a HP 360/390/428 from 1968 year. Meaning them heads went on all HP motors (high performance)

Is the K7 on the angled part of the block I descibed? If so look for one more number before the K. As I said it will be upside down with the engine upright. Even with the date code I'm afraid there is no other way other than taking off a head, measuring the bore and getting the crankshaft number to tell which engine you have. You would just be able to tell when it was cast. Even with a casting number it's tough to ID. Ford used the same casting number for quite a few 390/428 and 427 blocks which makes things difficult. The heads have a date code above the casting number under the valve cover. If the date code is close to the blocks date good chance the engine is all original. Then you could drop the pan and get the crank numbers with only the expence of a new oilpan gasket. This will give you the stroke of the engine anyway and if it looks to be all original probably determine which engine it is. Again this is only speculation as the engine could have been rebuilt and such a few times over the years with possibly some parts changed or upgraded. You just never know. The C8-H heads are listed as std heads in one book and have a HP application as Atrippy67 mentioned in another. I'll guess the HP Ford engine parts interchange manual is the HP listing. But anyway up to you what's next......G.

that cast number is on the block. They do not tell you what engine it is but it does give you clues to what you could have. You might have to take a wire brush and knock off some of the grim to see them. They do seem to get grungy there and the oil collects the dirt well. I bet I have 15 pounds of dirt stuck to my engine above the pan area... All part of dirt roads and mudding... Takes a bit of work to wash it off all the time.

I was going to say something about that ... I got a bone-stock never-rebuilt pre-'72 360 from a truck boneyard when I did my 390 (that is now removed from the highboy - RIP F26YEU22314). Anyway, it had C8AE-H heads on it - and the 360 was no HP motor

From here, and what I've seen personally, the only heads between the C8AE-H and the D2TE's were the 428CJ's (C9xx), right?

From the book I have the C8AE-H came on 360/390/428 and were considered a High Performance head. I have a set on my 428 in my truck... Thes had the 2.02 valve in them. But there are several heads beyond these that came on the 427 and 428 with the 2.08 valve. Mostly in Cobra Jet heads. All of what I can see in the C8XX numbers was listed as a High Performance head. You had to get down to C6XX to get out of the High Performance listings of my book. Granted this is the book I have and there is bound to be someone with a difference in opinion.
