I thought I had a 428 but now I don't know. The block number is C5AE-E, 13 DIF, Rods are C7AE-B, crank is IU. No numbers on pistons. The top of the piston is says its .30 over. The outside piston measurement is four and 1/8th of an inch. I used dial calipers to measure the bore at the top of the cylinder. It measured 4.158. I think this is a 390 block bored .030 but I am not sure. The book I have says 428's were made 66-70. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
according to my book the block is.. 65 427..but you said that the bore is 4.158 which is too small for it to be a 427 (4.23)1u is supposed to be a 410 and the rods are 428s. Have fun thats what my book says hope this helps ..The block could really be anything ...What is this engines stroke?..What kind of intake manifold did it have on it?
The block did not come with heads or intake. However I did get a set of 428 heads with the block. I picked up a aluminum 428PI manifold about four years ago from a 19yr. kid for $60.00. He didn't know what he had. The rods on the other side say A384. How do you measure the stroke? I measured the piston pin hole from the top of the piston to the top of the pin hole. It is the same as a stock 4.10 piston I have. However, from the bottom of the pin hole to the edge of the skirt, there is an 1/8th difference. Both pins are 15/16ths.
Ratsmoker I'm curious now. You say it's a 428 but according to my book they didn't make 428's till 66. Was this a early prototype or what. If the info is out of a book where could I buy that book. Your help is greatly appreciated.
I didn't bring any of my books to Korea with me but you can buy "How to rebuild a big block ford" from Motorhaven . It has many references to different casting numbers. It deals strictly with the FE and is a must have for a rebuild at almost any experience level. They may not have introduced the 428 until 66 but the casting for the blocks may have been made in 65. Not sure. Your bore should be 4.16 and the pistons should be the same. 1U is a 410/428 crank for sure. C7AE-B is common to the 390's and 428s.
