So there's a physical difference (allegedly) between the black and grey ones? Are the grey ones used in any other engine applications to account for this difference?
The ford ones only ever used in Ford 7.3L. There is a confirmed physical difference between black and gray. I have an oem black. I dont run it though.
I guess I must be one of the lucky ones - so far at least. I installed the BW unit I got at
O'riley's ( I know ) but it has not failed and my engine runs better than with the "recall unit"
Tested with wipers ETC. Also picked up the dark blue and grey one from IH but I understand that the grey one should not be used due to compatibility issues. Just my .02
I had a dark grey in mine when I sold the truck. It did not seem to run right, but did not quit like the rest. I was going to use the light grey and shim it/grind it until I got around the .05 clearance I had heard about at the garage.
That's ok! I appreciate you taking the time to look. The search continues!
Reading through this thread, I think I might have figured out the issue with my truck.
When I rebuilt my engine (top to bottom), I swapped out the grey Ford CPS for a BW unit. The truck has ran strong for the past ~3000 miles since the rebuild. However, I noticed it takes exactly 2 seconds of cranking no matter what. Hot, cold, sitting for a minute or a week, doesn't change. Never had any issues with wipers etc though, so I didn't think anything of it.
More recently, I've had a situation where the truck on rare occasion will crank fast but not start when hot. ICP/IPR all appear to be healthy. I can't recall if the tach wasn't moving at all during those events. I figured it was an air leak somewhere but haven't been able to track it down. Now I'm thinking it just might be CPS related... Gonna swap in my old grey CPS later this week and see what happens.
