My question is can you change out a half ton rear end with a 3/4 ton and sam with the front end. If you can what kind of modification would need to be done?
I've never done it before myself but I have replaced my rear 8.8 differential with a stock replacement. It seems to be more common on Chevy's and the older 70's Fords. Read this 3/4 ton swap - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans
Rear end doesn't look too bad but the front is a pain with all the steering and suspension stuff that would also need to be modified. Your front is likely a Dana 44 but the 3/4 tons can use a Dana 50, which is stronger so I would assume you want that. You want to be careful as I think you will run into problems with the knuckles and hub assemblies fitting
You never mentioned your purpose: are you building a better 4x4? Are you trying to tow/ carry more? If you want more towing/ cargo capacity and the truck is in decent shape, don't modify it but buy a 3/4 ton truck. It will probably be easier. You could swap the rear leaf springs for stronger. Can be done but I personally wouldn't want to invest the time and money
Thanks, No its 2wd and yes im trying to get more carrying capacity. Can't afford another truck at this time. Was just thing, cause i had chance to get under carriage for a couple a hundred. Just thinking.... Thanks for your ideas.
2WD half ton springs are 2-1/2" wide. 3/4-ton springs and 4x4 half ton springs are 3" wide. You're looking at replacing either the spring perches or the shackles and both front and rear hangers.
3/4 ton rear axles, at least full floating axles, are drilled on a 8x6-1/2 pattern, while half ton axles are drilled on a 5x5-1/2 pattern. You would need to have either the front or rear hubs redrilled or put up with the nuisance of never being able to rotate your tires. Odds are redrilling the front hubs would be preferable, as you probably won't be able to put 15" wheels over the 12" drums on a 3/4 ton axle.
The biggest problem, though, is once you reengineer the rear suspension you'll have a heavy-duty suspension on a light-duty frame. While they're shaped the same, the half ton frame is made of lighter, thinner stock than the 3/4 ton frame.
Your best bet, if you can't replace the truck, will be a trailer. A half ton will pull a lot more weight than it will carry.
I pulled a car on a trailer over 100 miles with my '94. Same transmission, sounds like the same engine (302). I had no problems getting it moving or keeping it rolling.
Have no problem pulling from the bumper was just wanting to pull the gooseneck. I've towed a 3500 lb boat and trailer up a 7% grade at 65 mph with no problem. So I know its got the power. Guess I'll just have to stick with the bumper pull for now. Thanks for all the input everyone.
what your looking to do is unwise,and here is why;
the frame,suspension and brake system are all too small to get you any increase in towing or payload ability.having the power to move something is a very small piece of the puzzle and addresses no safety issues.
as for that m5od trans,you can do many things with them,but i can assure you,they won't hold up to work of that of the hd trucks are capable of for any reasonable length of time/miles.just because someone did something they shouldn't have with one and it didn't brake,doesn't mean it can be subject to full time work duty like that.
if you need a hd.then you need a hd.you can't get blood from a turnip.if you don't start with the correct platform for your purpose,then anything you bolt to it would simply be staking a house of cards up.a very dangerous and unsafe situation.
smart question.
the dumb thing would be bolting hd truck parts to the small framed light duty (comparatively.they're still a dang fine truck) f150.
i know how it is brother.i had to make due with the f150 for a great many number of years until i could afford to get into the hd trucks.just keep working that f150 for all she's worth taking extra trips with lighter loads/tows until you can find your way into the hd platform.safety first.

If you are looking to upgrade your suspension give us a call or send me a message. I can give you a few different options that you would benefit the most from!
