cant set dwell on points

i got a '74 ford 302 in a f100, couldnt get it runnin for over 5 sec so i inspected the points and they were pitted so i took some light sand paper and made em shiny again, it will run now but i cannot set the damned dwell , i set it with a matchbook it runs good but dwell meter shows 12-15, i know the meter works cause i used it previously on my buddys truck. even if i set the gap of the points like 2x than what they should be the dwell stays 12-15, sometimes drops to 10. could it be the distributor? bought a new one from schmucks...but i think it may have went bad. any input would be nice thanks guys

What is the point of points?

Unless there is a compelling reason to stick with those, why not covert to newer technology and be done with that forever?

You might double check application but here's one option for a 74 Ford with a 302.

Sorry if that's not the help you wanted.

yea i wanna get a points eliminator but for now i only had the money for a distributor with points, i got it for $35 with my buddys discount. i had set the points before with no problem, and someone left they key on which pitted the points. i cleaned them up and what i am wondering is, why i cannot set the dwell now? is it the distributor? i may have to find an extra one to slap in there

Okay, there's more to the story that you're not telling us. Leaving the key on does not pit the points. When the engine shuts off, there's about a 95% chance that the points aren't even closed. Most of the time, the points cam lands in a way that pushes the points open. In the rare event that the points do land closed and the key is left on, you're left with a 4-amp draw through the points. This is a risk to the battery and the primary winding of the ignition coil, but the points will be just fine.

I read this story to say, that something is pitting the points prematurely, and you don't understand why. That's problem 1. Problem 2 is the dwell, which may or may not actually be a problem, and may be related to problem 1. Stop sanding the old points and go get a new set. Make sure the condenser is properly installed, and stop setting the points with a matchbook. Set them with a feeler gauge at the width specified on the valve cover sticker.

Point made....just get a Pertronix unit, be it I II or III

Maybe fmc400 can help you install it.

If the point are pitted, it could be the condenser is the wrong capacity.
Replace, don't clean the points and change the condenser too.
Gap the points at .017"
