I have a 2001 ford escape xlt that wont start when it gets below 30 degrees or so. Thought the starter was bad so replace it. Didn't fix it. Took it to a mechanic and he replaced the ignition switch and that didn't fix it either. He then talked to another mechanic about it and that guy said that it was an anti theft device malfunctioning that is located behind the key and tumbler, but I talked to a mechanic at a ford dealership and he had never heard of anything like that. Probably should give some more info. When you turn the key on the lights come on just like they should but when you try to start it nothing happens. It doesn't turn over or even click like it does when the battery doesn't have a good charge. Any help would be appreciated.
Ok so when the key is out of the ignition the theft light flashes every few seconds right and when you stick the key in and turn to on not start theft light goes solid then out completely right?
Ok so we know its not an antitheft issue and not a battery issue as the battery is newer and terminals are ok right? Your gonna have to put a volt meter on the small starter wire and turn the key as if you were trying to start it and then we need to back trace from there. We must do that or else we are just guessing. I don't want to say that it is this but in all my years at the ford dealership I have never seen a escape starter, ign switch, anything with PATS go bad. What I have seen is the trans range sensors go bad and cause this though but we must test for voltage at that starter first.
