I have a problem with my 1995 explorer. Today I went to the shopping mall and the truck started up just fine, 25 minutes later when I had done all my shopping, it wouldn't start. Everything would light up but the engine wouldn't turn over all I heard was a click. I tried to turn it on several times but nothing, it was completely dead. So I called my insurance's on-road assistance service so they would come and help me jump start my car. When the guy showed up I tried to show him how it wouldn't start and what do you know? As I turned the key it started just fine! So I took it to Western Auto to have the battery checked and the battery's charged up fine and so is the alternator. I took the truck home turned it off and tried to turn it on but it woudn't. Three hours have gone by and I just went and tried to turn it on and it turned on just fine. What do you think is the problem?!!!
Sounds like a battery cable problem. Carefully inspect all connections for corrision. Remember that cables can corrode on the inside and it may not be visible from the outside. Make sure all connections are tight. Could also be a bad solenoid, but start with the cables.
I recounted this one before in another post... I had a similar issue. Stopped the truck (97) and then it would just not start (turn the key and you hear a click inside, but the starter relay was not kicking in).... turns out the indexer on my shift lever seems to have gotten touchy (at 200k it is not a surprise)... I have to make sure to push it all the way over to ensure that it truly is in park. Now that I know this I have not had an issue since.
