Got the doors drilled today for the mirrors in the forward position. And drilled out the nutserts for the standard mirror's bottom mount since one of those will be outside of the mount's boot and the other one will be under the boot. You can see the instructions to the body man to weld them up and smooth them out.
At the top of the picture you can easily see the three original holes as they are much larger than needed. Not sure why there's a middle hole as neither set of mirror use it an there's no nut set up for it like on the other two holes. Anyway, you can see the hole for the third bolt toward the right above.
And I cleaned up the inside of the door in the area of the new bolt holes. That took a lot of work to get off the old Peel & Seal as well as the original sound-deadening material off since it was really, really stuck But the area is now clean so that the adhesive I use for the stiffener will adhere. I'm thinking that the much larger 3-bolt mount and an internal stiffener should do wonders for the steadiness of the mirrors. I hope.
Hmmm? Let's think about the possibility... every now and then in a thread regarding junkyard finds, someone mentions the existance of hinted at but never substantiated power mirrors option for our trucks. Wouldn't the mirrors require a hole for a wiring harness?

They certainly would, and that one might well be it. Good thinking!

It's a great guess for sure. But Ford did a sloppy job of running the wiring harness. I saved the below pic from somewhere. Can't remember where, but IIRC, the mirrors were on a Bronco, and taken in a junkyard somewhere.
Here you can clearly see the wiring harness running through a grommet directly below the upper mirror bracket.
I saw another Bronco on Ebay once that had the mirrors, and it too had the wiring harness feeding through a grommet below the upper mirror bracket.
Yuk! I previously thought I wanted those little-seen mirrors, but having now seen them I think not. I'm going to be happy with my NOS trailering mirrors.
Yea, I'm all for adding factory options to my truck, but the three I'll never add are power mirrors, A/C, and Cruise Control. I have my Ranger for all of that.
Dad's came with A/C and cruise. The cruise was working WELL when I pulled the truck apart for the resto, but not the A/C as it had a leak. I'll fix that as it goes back together, and will convert it to R134a.
But, I've added the cargo lamp (actually a 3rd brake/cargo lamp from a '93) as it didn't have one initially. And, it'll get the map/dome light that came with the cargo light. Plus a tach and the padded steering wheel from an '85. And power windows and locks as well as the bullet-hole wheels. I think that's all the added factory options that might have been on the truck originally, although there might be a few more factory options from later years.
