Quick question about mirrors...or, maybe not so quick...
I made a big mistake and removed both outside rear view mirrors. I have the camper special, so I have the huge mirrors that mount on the frames that have three mounting points. The mirrors themselves are in excellent shape, as are the six stainless steel mounting plates. I removed them to repair the doors where someone had hit the mirrors on somthing and dented the doors. I also cleaned up the six mounting plates and bought twelve stainless steel bolts to mount the plates and six more stainless steel bolts to mount the mirror frames onto the mounting plates. Now for the question...does anybody have a picture of exactly how these things are supposed to mount up? The mounting plates are not all the same. Two of the six are bent a little less than the other four. Do these two go on the bottom? Does the mirror frame mount on top or below the top and bottom mounting plates and does the front one mount in front of the plate or behind it? If somebody could post a closeup picture of their mirror, that would be great. Thanks in advance!

Wish I could help you, mabey can.
Next time pay better attention to things when you tear them apart.
Not to sound like a dick, but when I tear down some thing for the first time I either do one side at a time or take pics.

Thank you very much. Your bolts holding everything together look just like the ones I took off. I went to a fastener company and got all stainless steel bolts to hold them together. I really appreciate the picture. You just don't know how much this helps! I had contemplated replacing the mirrors, but they are in such good shape, I couldn't bring myself to do it. The big mirrors really add personality to the truck anyway.

They also add a nasty blind spot...don't forget that. Look once, twice, three times with those mirrors before you make your move. Almost got broadsided once cause I didn't look three times. Pretty scary...smelly, too.

They make your truck wider too. I was in a real long line at a toll booth for stadium parking. When I got up to the booth, it looked like the mirrors would not clear the poles on the sides of the opening. After carefully centering the truck, I had less than a half-an-inch clearance on each mirror! Sheeesh, it's a good thing because there was no way I could have busted out of the waiting line. Next time I'll use the lane for campers! Just something to watch for.

I had my truck painted and I had driven it a few times before putting the camper special mirrors back on and after I put the mirrors on I sure did notice much more wind noice created frame those huge mirrors. If I could do it again I would have had the mirror mounting holes filled in and put smaller mirrors on for less wind noice and easier driving in tight areas, plus no blind spots when pulling out on roads.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Sep-02 AT 02:48 PM (EST)]I have been driving around for a couple of days without the mirrors on the truck, and I have really noticed a difference in wind noise. I had thought about replacing the mirrors with smaller ones, but I couldn't find any that looked right. Dennis Carpenter has some, but they cost $56.00 each. I hate to put that much into mirrors when I already have the camper special ones that are in great shape.

I would suggest putting the mirrors back on your truck just as they came off, you've gone to the trouble of getting new stainless mounting hardware, and asking how to properly re-install them, and they just look right on a classic Ford pickup.
BTW: I'd go to a quality auto parts store and buy 2 4" or even 5" clamp on blind spot mirrors and attach then just below the main mirror head, these are like BIG trucks have, they will eliminate the blind spots, stop you from straining your neck looking side to side when changing lanes, and look neat too!

I agree with the previous response, you have spent some time and effort on your original mirrors and might as well use them but if you do not like the bad things about them you may want to consider the ones that are listed in catalogs for our trucks. They are small and look ok, they cost $39 ea. I can scan a pic of them if you need.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Sep-02 AT 10:43 PM (EST)]What is the name of the catalog that keeps getting edited out because it "doesn't support this site"? I am just curious. My email address is freeky1(No Email Addresses In Posts!). If you want to email me the name, I would appreciate it. I am a little confused as to why the name of a catalog would be edited out of posts on these forums. The last time I checked, we still lived in a free country. I feel like I am missing out on a particular vendor that may have something I might need. Maybe it's JC Whitney?
PS - And, I did plan to put the old mirrors back on. I happen to think the truck looks naked without them. As soon as she's painted, they will be right back home on the truck.

freeky, another option might be to sell your CS mirrors on Ebay. In the past, these type mirrors in good condition bring a very hefty price. Me, I like the looks (character) and don't drive my truck enough to worry about the practicality or lack thereof of them...plus I just spent a lot of time reconditioning with all new stainless hardware and hand polishing all parts.
