Anyhow.....looks like the previous owner sectioned and cut part of the radiator saddle to install a larger (taller) radiator.
May I leave the front fenders and fascia in place and just support across the bodywork underneath with a 2x4 or 2x6 on a floor jack so I can remove the saddle to do some metal work on it? I'm hoping to not remove the fenders, though I realize not the end of the world.
I just need to borrow the saddle for a few hours to weld back in some metal.
What year is your truck? I've a 54. I've not done what you're thinking but seems like it should work. I'd put the frame on jack stands and then support the fenders, maybe up thru the wheel wells. the radiator saddle (or support) will have to come out the rear. Hopefully you have room between the major engine components and the upper valance. Post back how it goes.
Try temporary bracing to hold the spacing.
I could've been an ad man.
👍 good idea.
Kladd,
I appreciate the offer. The radiator, I think, does not fit without removing some material from the horseshoe. It is taller than stock. I want the extra cooling capacity.
So, I think I need to modify the modified version 😃
Thank you much !!
If you are near to San Diego county glad to buy you a beer to say thank you for the offer.
It might be a good idea to put some kind of padding between the lower rock pan (under the grill) and the frame, and then do as you said and support the fenders from underneath. I know on mine it is only about 1/2" between the two and when you unbolt the saddle from the inner fenders, it will want to drop. Otherwise, I would think your plan would work.
Yea, you 48 to 52 gusy need to chime in. but the spacing between the roll pan and the frame horns is close on my 54 so some padding in there is a good idea. I've no idea how much the whole thing will move around when you cut loose the radiator support. I would also have to remove my battery tray because that is bolted to the side of the radiator support.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm out of town til this weekend. I think the bodywork would rest on the frame horns upfront. I will heavily pad that area. Pretty sure the grill will hold everything firmly together.
