Looking inside turbo exit side

On a 6.0 turbo, when you remove the exhaust pipe going to the CAT and look in the turbo what should I see?

Should it be a turbine with fins in there or a flat piece of metal with a hole in the center?

You can easily see the turbine with a mirror (because of the angle).

This is on a van. I can look right in to it with the dog house removed. I don't see a turbine with fins in there, just a flat piece of metal with a small hole in the middle.

You should be able to see the turbine wheel on the exhaust side. And compressor wheel on intake side. Even though it is a van. If it is the 6.0 I thought it was the same turbo. And all the turbos I have seen you can see the turbine wheel, you wont be able to see the vanes though, but turbine wheel yes. Bit I find this hard to believe it is gone. I would think you would know it prior due to it being an absolute dog of a vehicle

Can you post a photo of what you see?

Are you having problems?

He may have found his problem. Lol.

To the op take off the intake side and spin the compressor wheel. For it to be missing on the exhaust the compressor wheel would have to be broken off and stuck as well.

I bought it as a no start. A dealer diagnosed it about a year ago. It's been sitting for a while. I'll have to take a pic and post it.

It won't keep the engine from starting though.

Based on pics I see on google images the turbine is in fact missing. Does this mean the intake side may have got sucked in to the engine?

It cranks and acts like it wants to start, but will not. When cranking, it leaks a stream of oil out of the turbo.

No, it means the turbine may have gone down the exhaust pipe. You should be able to pull the intake hose and see the compressor wheel. Regardless it's going to need a turbo.....

That still won't keep the engine from starting.

This bit of info is scary to me though an indicative of something more concerning. How and why is the turbo shaft broken, and when it did break where did all that debris go? Would the intercooler catch the compressor pieces prior to being ingested? You gotta look at the compressor side now, and see what carnage is in there.

I don't see the turbine like in the picture above, it is gone without a doubt. The intake side will take some work to look at since it's in a van.

The dealer that diagnosed it a year ago claims in got ingested in to the engine. Then again, I will have to pull it apart in the compressor side to verify that.

Is the engine junk if that happened?
