So many possible causes of steering and suspension noise. Probably the best thing to do would be to get underneath and start shaking things and see if something is obviously loose. Jack each wheel up and wiggle it while having someone else watch for movement in the wheel bearings, ball joints, and tie rod ends. There are other things to look at, too, specific to each suspension design used (it would help to know what year Explorer we're talking about).
If you're not quite up to it yourself, a lot of shops will do a front end inspection for free (in the hopes of finding something wrong and getting you to pay them to fix it).
